The trails for 2019 cover the following festivals:

Chinese New Year – Light-Up trail – 4 Jan 2019 to 4 Feb 2019

Chinese New Year is the most important festival in the Chinese Calendar, it symbolises the beginning of a New Year, the possibility to start a new all over again. It is the time of the year where family ties are reaffirmed and strengthened, as family reunion dinner, visits to family, relatives and friends as well as the exchange of gifts play an important role and thus reminding everyone of what importance family is in society.

Explore the streets of Chinatown during this festive period, enjoy lights, sounds and unexpected discoveries while learning about the festival and its significance.

Thai Pongal – a Harvest Festival – 12 to 16 January 2019

Thai Pongal is one of the most important festivals celebrated by Tamil people in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and Tamils worldwide, including those in Malaysia and Singapore. Join us on this trail to explore and experience how this celebration spills over from homes into the streets – be part of community festival!

Thaipusam Festival – 20 and 21 Jan 2019

Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (January/February). It is mainly observed in countries where there is a significant presence of Tamil community such as India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore.

The festival commemorates the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a Vel “spear” so he could fight an evil demon.

In Singapore, Hindu devotees start their procession at the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple in the early morning, carrying milk pots as offerings or attaching “kavadis” and spikes pierced on their body for a procession that travels for 4 kilometers. Witness the unwavering demonstration of faith by joining our trail.

Hari Raya Light-Up Trail in Geylang Serai – 5 May to 5 June 2019

Hari Raya Idul-Fitri marks the end of the fasting month, Ramadhan and the arrival of the new month, Syawal. Ramadhan is the holiest month in the Muslim calendar. It is mainly a time of discipline and self-control.

During the month of Ramadan night markets are set up – from delicious food, traditional tidbits to decorations for the house and new clothes are on offer to prepare for Hari Raya Idul-Fitri. The streets of Geylang Serai are awash with lights and sounds – celebrate with the community – join us on our trail!

Deepavali Light-Up Trail in Little India – 1-26 Oct 2019

Deepavali (or Diwali the “festival of lights”) is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn (northern hemisphere) or spring (southern hemisphere) every year. Arguably the most important festival in Hinduism, it is an official holiday in many countries.

The streets of Little India are illuminated with lights and festive bazaars are set up with dazzling colours and tantalising aromas. Enjoy the festive mood and join us on a trail of fun and discovery!
